Adventures with an exacto knife

A week ago Tuesday Seth wanted to cut something out of foam board. Being the good mother that I am, I sent him out to the garage to do the cutting - wouldn't want him to accidentally cut into countertop or flooring inside the house, you know.

Instead he cut off the tip of his finger out in the garage.

Oh my goodness, can you feel my light headedness as I re-live it in my mind?

I was doing homework with Levi when he came in and said he had cut himself. He grabbed a napkin and put it over his finger, but I quickly realized just how badly it was bleeding. Then I took a look at it. And told him I thought we needed to go the emergency room.

Randy was in California, so fortunately a neighbor was able to keep Abigail and Levi. We headed off to First Choice Emergency Room. We have had great experiences there - they handled my appendicitis and Abigail's toe stitches really well. And they did a great job with Seth, too.

He cut off the top side of the finger tip, so instead of being rounded it is now sort of diagonal and missing some of the fingernail. They said it will grow back pretty well, but there may be nerve damage for quite some time. The biggest challenge was to stop the bleeding since there was nothing to stitch shut.

11 days later it is healing up very nicely. But the kids at school have requested he keep it covered still for a while. They don't like looking at it.

Here he is in his sling on day 2. He wore the sling for a while so he wouldn't bump it and so it would stay elevated (to help with throbbing). He only asked for pain meds twice, and once it was just advil. Tough kid. I am very proud of how he handled the whole thing.
